Sophie Moreno

Our beloved daughter, sister, and aunt, Sophie Moreno, 64, died unexpectedly as a result of heart failure on September 6, 2013. She was born to Refugio and Irene Moreno in Austin, Texas on August 15, 1949. Sophie lived her entire life in the 78704 zip code and attended school in the surrounding area. She was a South Austin girl and spent her life caring for her parents, especially her Mother, who was her constant companion after her Dad passed away. Although Sophie never married, she was a mother figure to the children and grandchildren of her eight siblings. Sophie was always available to bake cupcakes for a school event, sew a patch for a Girl Scout meeting, or make a mum for a homecoming event. She could come through on a last minute request and deliver with ease. She had the gift of gab and if you had a conversation with her you learned something. She had a tidbit of advice that never led you astray. Sophie worked her entire 30 year career with Southwestern Bell and then AT&T as a telephone operator. On a daily basis she would chat with people from all over the country and in each conversation learned a noted fact about each location that person would be calling from. It was amazing how much she absorbed. Sophie was quick witted, she was loyal to a fault and was the best fan at sporting events. She loved Barbara Streisand and George Strait music, she collected thimbles, she loved to swim, and preserving family pictures were her passion. She meant what she said and never faltered from her viewpoint. She endured 18 years of dialysis without complaint. She was strong in mind and spirit and she truly believed that her love for her pets would guide her straight to Heaven. Sophie is survived by her mother, Irene Moreno, siblings, Florence Moreno, Marianne Salas (Jesse), Rick Moreno (Gloria), Randy Moreno, Ester Anguiano (Jesse), Terry Esquivel (Mike), Roberta Garza, and Rene Moreno (Joy). She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, numerous cousins and her beloved dogs Juno and Chloe. She was preceded in death by her father, Refugio Moreno, grandparents Alfredo and Agnes Moreno, grandparents Santos and Lenora Saucedo and her beloved nephew, Michael Daniel Esquivel all whom greeted her with joy on her entry to her new body and life. The Rosary will be recited from 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Angel Funeral Home, 1600 S. 1st St., Austin. The funeral will be held Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at San Jose Church. Burial will follow at Assumption Cemetery. Her nephews will proudly serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Freddie Maldonado, Timothy Garza and pallbearers, Eddie Nunez, Jr., Roger Moreno, Randy Moreno, Nick Anguiano, Adan Torres, and Jeremy Garza.
