Soon after graduation from Frost High School, Elaine moved to Corsicana. She attended Hill County Jr. College where she first met Campbell Gillespie, Jr. They married on August 14, 1954 and enjoyed 60 years together until his death on Jan. 31, 2015.
She worked at State National Bank until the birth of their daughter, starting her new career as mother, room mom and cook extraordinaire.
She loved reading, cooking, learning and travel. She learned to read in her grandfather's lap reading the newspaper which allowed her to start school early. Her love of learning and reading were expressed through her membership in two book clubs; Quintilian and Nineteenth Century, she was frequently in attendance at the Kinsloe House and community programs and participated in supper and bridge clubs as well.
Elaine traveled frequently with Campbell with a special love of England and Ireland, their around the world trip and an Alaskan cruise.
Elaine's cookbook collection from around the world filled a room! Her love of cooking was only overshadowed by the joy of grandchildren. Cookies were available on all visits! Even in her later years as Alzheimer's took her short term memories, Elaine loved to share a meal and dessert, feed the ducks and enjoy nature; the beauty of water, clouds and trees were often discussed. Her love of life leaves a legacy of the importance of family, food and fellowship. May we all live as fully.
The family wishes to thank Sundance Memory Care, Cedar Park, Amazing Angels, Angels at Home and Westminster Presbyterian Church for the extra support during Elaine's final years and our hometown for your current support and love.
She is survived by her children; Cynthia Gillespie Grant and husband Walter Dee Grant, Jr. and Campbell M. Gillespie, III and wife Mary. She leaves a wonderful legacy to her grandchildren; W. Dee Grant, III, Sean Grant, Elyssa Grant Bell, Abbey Gillespie, Shelby Gillespie and Jillian Gillespie and her three great grandchildren with multiple nieces and nephews.
