A private memorial service for Elgin Rohde, 96 of Lexington, Texas will be held at a later date. Burial of ashes will follow in the Florida Chapel Cemetery in Round Top, Texas.
Elgin John Fritz Rhode was born in Warrenton, Texas on November 14, 1921 to John Herman & Laura Louise (Brunken) Rohde. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Warrenton on June 4, 1922 by Rev. Mc Hoermann. He was confirmed on September 15, 1935 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Warrenton by Rev. Bossard. Elgin was drafted in the U.S. Army from the Fayette County Courthouse when he was 18 years old along with many of his cousins. He served a complete European Tour during World War II. After the war, Elgin moved to Houston where he was married to Esther Bell Philp on June 16, 1953. They had three daughters, Betty, Peggy and Judy. He worked as a mechanic in Houston until he joined the apprentice program to be a Millwright Carpenter. He was a charter member of the Millwrights of Houston Local #2232 and held membership for 70 plus years. Elgin was a member St. John’s Lutheran Church in Houston, Alvin Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alvin, St. John Lutheran Church in Bellville, and currently at Waldeck Lutheran Church in Waldeck. He has been visited by Pastor Rotter at home for the past five years and received communion during those visits. He lived with his daughter Betty Luedke during that time. Elgin was a loving husband and father who loved his family unconditionally. He loved gardening, repairing antique clocks, carving wooden ducks, dancing and reading. His service in the U.S. Army was a big influence on him and his family. Three of his granddaughters are currently serving in the U.S. Air Force and his son-in-law is serving in the U.S. Marines.
At the age of 96, he departed this world on Sunday, September 9, 2018 at St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange under the care of Hospice Brazos Valley and staff. He will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Laura Rhode; his wife of 59 years, Esther Bell Rohde; three sisters, Irine Rohde, Leona Weigelt, and Elda Wessles; two brothers, Edwin Rohde and Elton Rohde, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Elgin is survived by his three daughters, Betty Lynn Luedke and her fiancé Ricky Lynn Cook Jr. of Lexington, Peggy Jean Rohde of Killeen, and Judy K. Price and her husband Stuart of Paris, Texas; five grandchildren, Kimberly Paige Mecom and her fiancée Hunter Buckmeyer of Austin, Ashley Palmer and her husband Dillon of North Carolina, Taylor Cruz and her husband Ramiro of Ohio, Mark Wade Luedke Jr. of Lexington, and Katy Lynn Luedke serving in the Air Force; two great grandchildren, Dalton Palmer of North Carolina and Kaylee Cruz of Ohio.
