D'Anne McAdams Crews, a Huntsville, Texas native, passed away on January 14, 2019. She was 84. She was the daughter of the late W.D. and Annette Turner McAdams.
D'Anne was an honor graduate of both Huntsville High School and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she was awarded her Bachelor's degree with a major in Business Education.
She continued her education at Sam Houston State University where she earned her Master's Degree. She was active in the Sam Houston State University Alumni Association, and was elected its first female president in 1975.
D'Anne was the general bookkeeper for McAdams Company Dry Goods stores in East Texas, operating under the umbrella of W. D. McAdams Co. from the early 1960's until the time those stores were sold in 1978.
A longtime historian and genealogist, Mrs. Crews spent many years in various lineage societies, assuming various leadership positions, and culminating in her role as National President of the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists, from 1988-1991.
Her love of history and family was evidenced her by her writing of Huntsville and Walker County, Texas: A Bicentennial History, which was awarded the outstanding local history of the bicentennial by the Texas Historical Commission in 1977. Her love of history and Huntsville never wavered throughout her life, as she continued to serve the city in various capacities. Her most recent area of unselfish service was as Chairman of the Oakwood Cemetery Board, responsible for overseeing the historic icon in the heart of Huntsville.
Mrs. Crews was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward “Bo” Crews, Jr. She is survived by her two daughters, Kay Allison and Kelly Anne Crews, and her sister, Kay Mc Adams Barrett.
Services will be held at the Sam Houston Funeral Home on Thursday, January 24, 2019, at 11:00am.
