Billie Lou Gorman Sheets, 92, of Corsicana, slipped away peacefully from the grip of Alzheimer's Disease June 29, 2021, with countless loved ones welcoming her home, no doubt.
Billie was born in Montfort to the late Budo Guy Gorman and Willis Ione Harper-Gorman, the proud big sister to what would eventually be two younger siblings, Delores and Tommy Gary.
She loved country music, square dancing, her daytime "stories" on TV, kitchen table chats, baking and anything (and we mean anything!) craft related.
On July 23, 1945, she married Charles Afton "Bid" Sheets at the Methodist Parsonage in Chatfield. He had always claimed his being 21 and her being 16 would give him time to "train her up right", though we know full well who trained whom. Together, they had three children – two sons and a daughter – Jerry, Anthony and Casina.
She was happy with the simple things, including washing dishes by hand instead of having a dishwasher (much to our disappointment come chore time), dancing beside Paw Paw to the AM transistor as they worked. Since she and Paw Paw were both up before the sun (and usually in bed while it was still up in the evening), she was used to preparing meals early in the day and quickly became known to all us kids for her "Maw Maw coffee" that accompanied amazing griddle-on-a-gas-stove breakfasts, prepared with love. Of course, there was also the famous chocolate cream pie and mile-high meringue…perfection!
She worked for Adam Hats Co. for 19 years and then later in life, after her own children were grown, happily served the students of Fannin Elementary in the cafeteria until she retired six years later to be a full-time Maw Maw!
She was a humble example of commitment to God and family, instilling in us a belief in remaining true to yourself while loving any and all to the fullest extent. Her door was truly open to all and countless people are better for having known and loved her.
Maw Maw, the lifetime of memories you and Paw Paw have blessed us with are too numerous to list but to each of us, some of the simplest things – hopping on a backyard swing to listen to the locusts in the pecan tree; the pop and "pssshhhhh" of a cold Coke can opening; little green Tupperware cups; a handmade quilt; the smell of bacon and griddle toast sizzling in the morning; handmade ceramics and baby dolls; red vinyl seats morphing into brutal torture devices in the hot Texas sun; cool, fresh-cut Saint Augustine grass; the mere sight of a deck of Skip-Bo cards; sweets of ANY kind; the intro to an episode of "As the World Turns", "The Young & The Restless" or "Hee-Haw"; the smell of a Toni home permanent and tightly-wound pin curls; remembering the dreaded taste of the Lava Soap bar if we got too "big for our britches"; someone calling us "Darlin'"; the static AM transistor radio filling your warm, tiny kitchen with the songs of Roy Rogers, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn (to name only a few) – will always bring a smile to our faces and tug at our hearts. The moments and memories held close, both shared and individual, are as countless as they are priceless and along with all who loved you, are your legacy left behind from a life unselfishly and graciously lived.
Billie was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 71 years, her daughters-in-law, Darelle Sheets and Linda Kay Sheets, a grandson, Paul Orsborn, her sister Delores, and numerous other family members.
Survivors include her brother Tommy Gary Gorman and his wife, Priscilla of Kerens; sons, Jerry Sheets, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Anthony Sheets, of Corsicana; daughter, Casina Sheets-Cobb and husband, Larry, of Carrollton; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, and countless other family members and friends who love and will miss her greatly.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday, July 9, 2021, at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana. Services will be at 2 p.m. in the afternoon in the Magnolia Chapel of Corley Funeral Home with her grandson, Pastor Terry Shelton, officiating. Graveside services will immediately follow at New Chatfield Cemetery, in Chatfield.
