Laura Mae Leonard – July 25, 2013 — — Laura Mae Leonard, 91, of Dumas died Thursday, July 25, 2013, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2013, in Temple Baptist Church with J McGaughy officiating. Burial will be in Dumas Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Laura was born May 16, 1922, in Texhoma, Okla., to Samuel and Laura Stump. She worked as a waitress. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; two sons, Billy Leonard and Buddy Leonard; and two daughters, Patty Brown and Sharon Ehli. Survivors include three daughters, Judy Larner of Dumas, Sue Deases of Kenedy and Mary Leonard of Watauga; eight sons, Richard Leonard of Dumas, Gary Leonard of Waco, David Leonard of Cannon City, Colo., Butch Leonard of Thailand, Danny Leonard of San Antonio, Marlin Leonard of Kentucky, Terry Leonard of Washington and Mike Leonard of Dothan, Ala.; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2013, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Bob Schroeder and Bev Gambrel officiating. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Dona was born Aug. 5, 1921, in Amarillo to Ralph E. and Alva Roush. She married Elliott G. Gilmer on Nov. 14, 1944, in West Amarillo Christian Church during World War II. Dona attended San Jacinto Elementary, Sam Houston Junior High and Amarillo High School, where she graduated from in 1939. She then attended Amarillo College, where she graduated from in 1941. Dona started working for Amarillo National Bank on Polk, then worked for Citizens Bank in Lubbock. She helped put her husband through school at Texas Tech University. Survivors include her husband, Elliott G. “Gil” Gilmer; two daughters, Cherry Estopare and husband Leo of Wichita, Kan., Judy Ries and husband David of Branson, Mo.; a son, Jim Gilmer and wife Shirley of Amarillo; three grandchildren, Dona Cooper and husband Jason, Karen Bower and husband John and Jake Gilmer; and four great-grandchildren, Alex, Kevin, Brooke and Brady. Posted in Amarillo | Condolences » Larry Joe “Skip” Johnson – July 26, 2013 — — Larry Joe “Skip” Johnson, 73, of Amarillo, died Friday, July 26, 2013. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m., Monday, July 29, 2013, in Velma Cemetery, in Velma, Okla., with the Rev. Sid Bazzrea of First Baptist Church of County Line officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Larry was born Aug. 4, 1939, in Ranger to Almer Lee and Chloe Johnson. He graduated from Velma-Alma High School in Velma in 1957 and attended Cameron State Agricultural College in Lawton, Okla. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and retired in 1979 at the rank of Master Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he had various duties as a Chinese linguist, Morse Intercept Operator, Intercept Analyst, an Administration Superintendent and with NATO in Denmark. He also was a veteran of the Vietnam War Era, stationed in Thailand. After retiring from the Air Force, Larry attended Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, where he received his Associate of Applied Science degree in Nuclear Technology. He then spent 20 years as a Nuclear Technologist in the Department of Energy complex at Los Alamos National Labs in Los Alamos, N.M., Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, and retired from the Pantex Plant in Amarillo in 2004. He also served as Mayor of Bishop Hills from 1999 to 2004. His favorite loves were his family and flying airplanes. Larry will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Twenty-eight years after graduating high school, Larry reconnected with his high school sweetheart and married Donna Kaye Carroll on Aug. 6, 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, his brother-in-law, and his previous wife, Jennie Lee. Survivors include his wife, Donna; two daughters, Kelly Johnson-Mitchell of San Antonio and Lori Jobmann and husband Carl of Ortonville, Mich.; a step-daughter, Brandi McLaws and husband David of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Judy Oedewaldt of Harrah, Okla.; a brother, Terry Johnson and wife Brenda of Velma; two brothers-in-law, Fred Carroll and wife Lisa of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Nicky Carroll and wife Nancy of Velma; a sister-in-law, Jil Roberts and husband Roy of Velma; nine grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; best friends, Wes Estill of Albuquerque, Howard Bailey, Jack Covington, and Mike McCann, all of Amarillo; and numerous other family and friends.
