David Martin Paul, 62, passed away on Sunday, July 29th, 2018, in Houston, TX, surrounded by family, with his beloved wife, Susanne, by his side. David was passionate about serving the Lord, making it a fitting testament that his last actions were spent in Guatemala serving others in His holy name. David was born August 2, 1955 in St. Louis, MO, to Donald and Katherine Paul. David was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Tulsa, and finished his business degree at the University of Houston-Downtown. In his 20+ year career in IT with Exxon-Mobile, he brought an attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, before retiring in the fall of 2016. At that time, David dove right into home projects, traveling and volunteering for as many causes as he could, always ready to devote his time and talents. Among those projects was becoming president of Caring Critters, an organization he was a member of for over 20 years, which provides animal-assisted therapy for those in hospitals and nursing homes. It was a natural fit, given his love for animals, his sense of humor and deep compassion for those in need. David was on his 9th mission trip to Guatemala with Salud y Paz, providing health and dental care to local communities. While joining David on this most recent mission trip, Susanne gained a better appreciation of the hospitality and graciousness of the local people. In one of his last comments to Susanne, David stated "Now you understand why I love it here so much." David was preceded in death by his parents and his best friend, Larry. He will be deeply missed by his wife Susanne, siblings Karen, Tim and Steve, sisters-in-law Lynda, Gail and Beth (Rick), many loved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Services will be held at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church on Friday, August 3 at 11:00 a.m. Susanne asks that all in attendance at this celebration of life wear a touch of orange, David’s favorite color. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations to Caring Critters, Inc., 2617C W. Holcombe, Box 265, Houston, TX 77025 or Program Salud y Paz, http://www.saludypaz.org.
